Tony Washington Singers Gospel Concert
Casale MarittimoDecember 29 2009, 9:30 PM
Church of Sant'Andrea,
There is a particular style of gospel music which is becoming more and more popular in the United States, based on a concept of “Gospel & Rhythm” freed from the classic stereotypes of African American music.
Combining the hymns of the whites with the rhythms of black Africa, this musical style is one of the most original, creative musical styles in the southern States today. The movement is very much alive and is continually evolving, contaminated by the most recent trends in Black Music (from R’n’B to Rap), and the Tony Washington Singers fit into this new line, offering a repertoire in “rhythm” enlivened by an aggressive, attractive “funky” base.
Tony - a singer with a voice that makes people fall in love - sings a very unconventional kind of gospel: his voice seems to rise in a soulful sound that is extraordinarily thrilling and refined, more beautiful and seductive than many forms of secular music. And yet his enthusiasm is so contagious that any onlooker, fan or curious passerby is drawn into a spontaneous form of participation based exclusively on love, joy and an unstoppable desire to free body and spirit in a collective dance. The group comes from Charleston (South Carolina), the city of “The Abundant Life Tabernacle”, a Baptist church where Tony sings in Sunday services as a soloist in the choir.

The group has performed all over the States, especially in the south, where they are considered one of the most important and innovative new gospel groups, performing outside the traditional gospel circuit with great success.
